Diwali Disaster in Jaipur: Fireworks Mishaps Cause Blindsight in 8 children – A Festive Blunder

Jaipur, India: Diwali celebrations have turned quite gruesome for many, leaving hundreds of people injured gravely. The accidents continued to haunt them and most specifically the children during Diwali in Jaipur. In a string of mishaps, eight children are reported to have lost vision in one eye and one more child has become blind totally. The series of accidents point out towards a severe need for heightened awareness about firecrackers and appropriate safety measures during the festival.
Firecracker accidents haunt Diwali in Jaipur
While traditionally it is an occasion for joy and celebration, this Diwali came as an accident in Jaipur with more than 300 victims found crowded in the casualty wards of Sawai Man Singh Hospital and other city hospitals due to accidents caused from fireworks. Major cases involve children who met accidental fires while celebrating and resulted in burn injuries and loss of eyesight to those children.
For parents, festival season turned into a nightmare instead. Many injured children were rushed to SMS Hospital. Medical staff at the hospital claim that nearly half of the patients treated here are children and that the injuries are mainly burns and eyes-related.
Four Days, 300 Patients: A Grim Toll on Jaipur's Health System
A flood of patients stormed into the casualty at SMS Hospital with symptoms that emerged after treatment after a spate of fireworks use, both in emergency cases at the emergency department, others visiting Charak Bhavan and many more streaming into the trauma center. A four-day crush: According to officials at the hospitals, the number of clients reaching over 300 patients during those four days treated for firework casualties. A cause for concern were some cases where young children complained that vision loss had ensued once tiny particles or sparks invaded their eyes. It was even worse for eight other children who lost an eye since their injuries were severe enough to cause loss of vision in one eye. One child lost his vision in both eyes - a grim reminder of what dangers firecrackers may hold for those not well instructed in their use.
Eye and Burn Injuries Continue an Upward Trend
Eye injuries reported being the worst, as a kid's eyes are delicate and can be damaged easily with strong light, heat, and chemicals in the firecrackers. Most cases resulted from close-range exposure wherein particles from firecrackers injured kids' faces and eyes. In others, the damage was very critical that doctors had no other choice but to immediately operate on such patients. The doctors did their utmost best while performing the said procedure to prevent further injuries.
While some of the children were treated and returned home, the severe ones spent more time in the hospital. Nine children required immediate surgical intervention. The doctors did their best to save as much of the child's vision as possible. However, eight children still lost partial vision in one eye, and one child lost his or her vision completely.
50 More Suffer Burns and Plastic Surgery Injuries
Apart from the eye injuries, the burns and plastic surgery unit at the hospital was also overrun with patients. Fifty children and adults were admitted for burns on their hands, faces, or other body parts after being in contact with lit firecrackers or firework debris. Some had minor burns and were discharged after dressing, while others had to be kept in the hospital for further treatment.
For them, Diwali went horribly wrong in the form of celebrations and, while doing so, they once again realized that firecracker safety precautions are extremely necessary.
It is learnt from the hospital sources that one patient admitted in the burn unit is critical, and this is what again portrays the seriousness of firecracker-related injuries.
Future Course: Requirement of Firecracker Safety and Awareness
This year's tragedies at Diwali in Jaipur have been a grave necessity for greater public awareness programs and appropriate measures as regards firecracker handling. The two incidents really highlight the fact that people need to be educated-not only families but particularly children-also about all possible risks concerning firecrackers and proper usage methods.
Thereby avoiding the firecracker accidents if people are taken aware of the precautions. Awareness programs should be integrated for schools, communities with assistance by the government before holding their next Diwali festivities.
